Someone who cares about a car usually has firm opinions about what belongs on it. That makes parts and generic merchandise difficult to choose. It also gives you a better subject: the exact car they already care about.
Why presents for car people go wrong
Most car gifts are about cars in general. The person receiving them does not care about cars in general. They care about one car, usually the one on the drive, and often one they sold years ago and still mention.

A registration is the one part of a car that is unarguably specific to it. Many cars can share a model and paint colour. Only one carries that complete registration at a time.

When to order
Use the dispatch information shown by the shop and leave additional time for the carrier. Dispatch is the period the shop controls. It is not a promise that a parcel will arrive on a particular day.
Christmas is not the only useful moment. A first car, a completed restoration, or the sale of a long-owned car can provide the reason for the gift and the exact details needed to make it specific.

Ask for a photo. Say you want it for something else, which is true. The plate will be in the picture and you will have everything you need.
