The DC5 and EP3 share Honda Type R thinking, not a body

This comparison answers identity, not desirability. I have drawn and checked both cars, but I have not road-tested two used examples on a buyer's behalf. The defensible differences are the body, market, engine specification and evidence printed beneath each illustration.

What is the difference between a Honda DC5 and EP3?

The DC5 is the 2001 to 2006 Integra Type R coupe for Japan. The EP3 is the 2001 to 2005 Civic Type R hatchback built in Swindon. Both are front-wheel-drive Type Rs with two-litre K-series engines and six-speed manual gearboxes, but they are different models.

Choose the strongest visible or documentary clue. A badge or the word K20 is not enough on its own.

A chassis code is useful only when it is attached to the right record. DC5 identifies this Integra generation. EP3 identifies the Civic body used for several versions, including the Type R. How do the DC5 and EP3 body shapes differ?

The DC5 is long, low and coupe-shaped, with four reflector lamps arranged in pairs around a pointed nose. The EP3 is a short, tall hatchback with an upright windscreen, a high roof and a broad single headlamp unit at each corner.

Those proportions survive missing badges and changed wheels. A DC5 side profile runs into a separate rear cargo area beneath its hatch, while the EP3 cabin rises much earlier and finishes in a near-vertical hatchback tail. From the front, the Integra's bonnet appears longer and lower. The Civic's windscreen and roof are visually closer to the nose.

Honda's original DC5 release calls it a coupe and identifies four multi-reflector headlights set into a V-shaped nose. Its EP3 launch presents the Civic as a three-door derivative and records the additional Type R body panels. These descriptions are useful because they were written when the cars were new, before later body kits blurred the standard cues.

Do the DC5 and EP3 use the same K20 engine?

They use related two-litre K-series DOHC i-VTEC engines, but the complete specifications differ. The Japanese DC5 Type R launched with a 220 PS K20A. The European EP3 Type R launched with a 200 PS engine identified in the catalogue as K20A2.

K20 is a family label, not permission to merge the numbers. Honda's July 2001 Integra release specifies 220 PS, a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox and a helical limited slip differential for the Japanese Type R. Honda's European Civic material specifies 200 PS, 196 Nm and a six-speed close-ratio gearbox for the EP3 launch.

The badges also do not settle the suffix. Both are Type Rs, and Honda used that name to describe a development approach across different models rather than one fixed engine output. The VTEC guide explains the valve-control principle. It does not imply that all VTEC engines have the same cams, tune or output.

Power units can create apparent disagreement. Honda's 220 PS DC5 rating converts to roughly 217 bhp, while my signed shop poster uses 214 bhp from completed DC5 work. The article displays the approved product figure and states the manufacturer launch rating separately instead of silently treating their labels as identical.

Why do market and manufacture matter for these Type Rs?

The DC5 Type R in this comparison is a Japanese-market car sold through Honda Verno dealers. The EP3 was manufactured at Honda's Swindon plant and offered across Europe, with other market versions requiring their own specification checks.

Honda's Type R history names both cars in 2001. It describes the DC5 as a new-era Integra with Brembo calipers and the EP3 as a UK-built Civic developed around a hot-hatch concept. The same year therefore does not mean the same sales route, equipment or rating.

A UK-registered DC5 is normally an imported Japanese car. Its British registration date may be later than its manufacture date and does not turn it into a UK-market specification. The EP3 needs care too. A Civic-shaped hatch with a Type R badge can have replacement parts, and Japanese and European versions should not be collapsed into one. The live print is tied to the verified European figures in my completed commissions.

Which figures do the DC5 and EP3 prints use?

The live DC5 poster uses the signed Japanese Integra specification. The EP3 poster uses the European Civic figures repeated across four finished commissions. These are product records for two exact choices, not average figures for every modified or imported car.

The table is not a buying verdict. A lighter number or faster quoted sprint cannot describe the condition of a twenty-year-old car, its maintenance or the quality of its modifications. It only shows why the wrong stats block cannot sit beneath the right-looking Honda.

The EP3's launch year is used even though completed customer posters carried several registration years. A commission's year belongs to that customer's car. A reusable catalogue poster needs the launch specification recorded consistently.

What evidence should you use on a modified DC5 or EP3?

Confirm the chassis identity and market first, then photograph the entire car and every changed panel. Engine swaps, replica badges and body kits can make one visible clue or one specification line describe a different car from the shell.

Start with the vehicle record and VIN, but do not ask either to prove a visual modification it cannot contain. Then take square front, both front-corner, side, rear and engine-bay photographs. Record wheel, bumper, bonnet, spoiler and lamp changes by name if the owner knows them.

A red Honda badge is supporting evidence, not a chassis code. The K20 marking is supporting evidence, not a full suffix or factory installation record. The body and documentation should form one coherent account. If they do not, I leave an uncertain badge or specification out instead of choosing the most plausible Type R detail.

Which Honda Type R print should you choose?

Choose the DC5 print for the low Integra coupe and the EP3 print for the tall Civic hatchback. Confirm the market and engine record before expecting the poster specification to match an individual imported or modified car.

Open the DC5 Integra builder or open the EP3 Civic builder. Both are reviewed and available. Paint, background and registration can then be changed inside the correct body.

If a body kit or conversion has changed the visible car beyond the catalogue drawing, send photographs through the custom route. Choosing the nearest Honda because both wear Type R creates precisely the mismatch this comparison is meant to prevent.
