For Europe, Honda kept the 240 PS 2.0-litre VTEC engine and six-speed manual, then revised the body structure, suspension, steering, ABS, gearshift hardware, wheels, tyres, lamps, bumpers and cabin. The car arrived in European markets from January 2004.
The most useful answer depends on what you are trying to establish. A buyer needs to know that the update went beneath the styling. An owner choosing a print needs the changed face. A person ordering parts needs the market, VIN and build date rather than the broad label alone.

How did Honda revise the 2004 S2000 chassis?
Honda added structural reinforcement, made the front springs and dampers stiffer and the rear softer, reduced the rear anti-roll bar diameter, altered rear toe and bump steer, lowered the rear roll centre by 9 mm, slowed the steering ratio by 7 per cent and used a more rigid steering mounting.
Those changes were intended to improve grip, precision, stability and ride behaviour, especially near the limit. They should not be turned into an invitation to test those limits on a public road. A used-car viewing can establish condition through safe operation, alignment evidence and specialist inspection.
The tyre package was part of the revision. Honda specified 215/45 R17 at the front and 245/40 R17 at the rear, replacing the earlier 16-inch sizes, and moved from Bridgestone Potenza S-02 to RE050 tyres. The official release describes a better wet and dry balance.
Current tyres may be a different make, size or age. Check all four for specification, load and speed rating, damage, pressure and uneven wear. An aftermarket wheel cannot erase the car’s identity, but it can remove one easy visual clue and change the questions needed at inspection.
Honda also described a lighter, more advanced ABS system. Electronic safety equipment should be checked through the warning-light sequence and appropriate diagnostics. Do not infer that a lamp going out proves every sensor and stored fault is healthy.
Did the European 2004 S2000 engine change?
No. Honda Europe explicitly said the high-revving 240 PS 2.0-litre DOHC VTEC engine remained unchanged. The six-speed layout remained, while Honda revised synchromesh components, the clutch housing, differential casing, clutch-delay system and accelerator-pedal feel.
Keep units intact. Honda’s release uses 240 PS, 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and 241 km/h. Jonathan’s catalogue follows his established poster convention of bhp and 0 to 60 mph, so its signed European block says 237 bhp, 6.0 seconds and 150 mph.
That is not a contradiction. 240 PS converts to about 237 bhp, while 0 to 100 km/h is not the same test as 0 to 60 mph. A specification is only quotable with its unit, market and test definition attached.
The live European engine also carries 208 Nm, not the 220 Nm used by the 2.2. Jonathan approved that correction after the older poster had paired the larger engine’s torque with the 2.0 wording.
When did the S2000 receive the 2.2-litre engine?
The date depends on market. Honda’s global history records Japan changing from 2.0 to 2.2 litres in November 2005, with drive-by-wire and other revisions. North American cars followed a different AP2 timetable. European cars retained the 2.0-litre F20C.
Do not assign the 2.2 from the bumper alone. The same later body can legitimately carry the European 2.0 or a Japan and US 2.2 specification. That makes this a true specification variant in the builder rather than a reason to duplicate the artwork.
Imports need their original-market evidence. The V5C and registration year do not by themselves establish original engine output, build specification or whether later parts have been fitted.

What should you check on an individual 2004 S2000?
