A headlight needs an outline, glass and internal shapes before it looks like the right car

Headlights are small on the poster and unforgiving on the car. If the outer angle is wrong, the whole face looks surprised or tired. I start with that boundary, then add only the glass and internal shapes the photographs actually show.

How are car headlights separated into drawable shapes?

The lamp is divided at visible boundaries: outer outline, lens or glass, dark housing, reflector or projector shapes, and any indicator or light-signature sections. Each part receives its own path or fixed fill when the reference supports it.

Not every lamp contains every part, and not every Photoshop file names them alike. The drawing follows what is visible on that car rather than forcing one reusable headlight template across the catalogue.

Why does the outer headlight boundary matter most?

The outer boundary sets the lamp’s position, width, height and angle against the bonnet and wing. Those relationships make the car recognisable before any projector or reflector detail is added.

I trace that perimeter with points and curved handles, using as few anchors as the shape permits. Too many points can produce a lumpy edge. Too few can flatten a deliberate corner or sweep.

Which shapes sit inside a drawn headlight?

A clear headlight reference may support separate glass, bezel, projector, reflector, shadow and coloured signal regions. Each boundary is kept only when it remains visible at the intended poster scale.

Several shapes can remain on one prepared fixed layer when they share a fill and role. Separate shape does not always mean a separate named Photoshop layer. It means the path data still preserves the boundaries needed by the renderer.

Why are headlights kept separate from body paint?

Headlight shapes are fixed detail, so the body recolour does not move their glass, housing or signal colours. Only layers identified as paint and shading receive the selected body colour transformation.

This separation has caught real faults. On one pale car, headlight glass was initially measured as a body shade and changed with the paint. Its lamp shapes now have an explicit fixed treatment so an orange car does not gain orange glass.

How much headlight detail should be drawn from a photograph?

Draw only the lamp boundaries and internal regions that reliable photographs establish. A second close view is required when glare, shadow, blur or angle hides a detail that would affect the finished portrait.

A front view gives the overall shape. A closer oblique view can reveal the depth of a projector, edge of an indicator or dark housing behind clear glass. Both should show the same lamp version fitted to the actual car.

What are the sources and limits of this headlight process?

Adobe documents how Photoshop paths use anchor points and handles to form precise curves. The shop’s prepared car files establish the separate fixed role used for lights, while each car’s approved reference establishes the actual shapes and colours.
