MX-5 NC facelift or pre-facelift: the front is what tells them apart

The NC was restyled during its run, and the change is at the front. The early car has round fog lamps set into a softer bumper. The later one drops them for shaped corner intakes and a harder edged nose. The engine and the figures stayed where they were.
The short answer
Look at the lower bumper. Round fog lamps set into it mean the pre-facelift car, roughly 2005 to 2008. Shaped corner intakes with no round lamps mean the facelift, from 2009. The engine specification printed on the poster is the same on both, so the front of the car is what you are actually identifying.
What changed at the front
The restyle concentrated on the nose. On the earlier car the bumper is a softer shape with two round fog lamps recessed into it, either side of a wide central opening. The headlights sit as rounded forms above.
The later car loses the round lamps entirely. The bumper corners gain shaped intakes, the central opening changes shape, and the whole nose reads harder edged. Seen together the difference is obvious. Seen one at a time it is easy to miss, which is why the fog lamps are worth checking first: they are either there or they are not.
Both descriptions come from the two drawings in this catalogue, compared side by side. They are deliberately limited to what a front view shows, because a front view is what these posters are.
Years and ranges
Each range below describes the car in that drawing rather than the whole NC generation. That distinction matters more than it sounds: the generation ran to 2015, and no single drawing covers all of it.

Why the figures do not move
The specification block is identical on both posters, and that is a finding rather than an assumption. Six of Jonathan’s finished commissions of this model, spanning 2007 to 2011 and therefore sitting either side of the restyle, all print the same engine, power, torque, weight, acceleration and top speed.
So the facelift moved the face and left the mechanical description alone. That is the opposite of what a spec variant does, and it is why these are two drawings sharing one set of numbers rather than one drawing offering two.
