This is not old hero versus newer substitute. The R33 belongs to the Skyline GT-R line and the 350Z to the Z line. They happened to meet near one another in Jonathan’s power column, then travelled there by different engineering routes.
Should you choose an R33 GT-R or Nissan 350Z?
Choose the R33 when the Skyline GT-R identity, RB26 twin-turbo engine, all-wheel-drive system and four-seat history are the reason for buying. Choose the 350Z when the later two-seat Z33, naturally aspirated V6 and rear-wheel-drive layout suit the brief. Buy either only after individual evidence and costings.
A selector can narrow the search. It cannot decide whether one imported shell is genuine or one Z has been repaired well. Move from category to chassis number as soon as you start viewing cars.
How are the R33 GT-R and 350Z related?
They are separate Nissan performance families. BCNR33 identifies the all-wheel-drive Skyline GT-R launched in January 1995. Z33 identifies the fifth-generation Fairlady Z and export 350Z launched in 2002, after the earlier Skyline-based GT-R production era.
Nissan’s Heritage Collection records the R33 GT-R as a delayed performance derivative of the ninth-generation Skyline. It lists the BCNR33 type, RB26DETT engine, four seats and four-wheel drive.
The Heritage Collection identifies the 2002 Fairlady Z Version ST as Z33, with a VQ35DE engine, two seats and rear-wheel drive. Jonathan’s later 2008 print uses the evolved VQ35HR rather than treating every 350Z year as identical.
The Fairlady name is the Japanese-market Z name. It does not make a 350Z a Skyline, and the Skyline badge does not make every R33 a GT-R. Use the Skyline generation guide to separate the three live GT-R faces.
How do the signed R33 GT-R and 350Z figures compare?
The R33 print uses 276 bhp, 353 Nm, 1,530 kg, 5.0 seconds to 60 mph and 155 mph. The 2008 350Z print uses 308 bhp, 358 Nm, 1,620 kg, 5.6 seconds and 150 mph. Units and model years stay attached to those blocks.

The R33’s 276 bhp is the 280 PS Japanese rating converted to the site’s bhp convention. The 350Z’s 308 bhp belongs to the later HR engine. Earlier DE and RevUp cars need their own dated figures.
Do not infer a winner from one acceleration number. Test surface, tyres, launch, weather, transmission and measurement method change results. A thirty-year-old modified car adds much larger unknowns.
Why does the drivetrain layout matter?
The R33 combines a longitudinal twin-turbo six with an electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system and four-wheel steering technology. The 350Z uses a naturally aspirated V6 driving the rear wheels in a dedicated two-seat platform. Maintenance and diagnosis therefore diverge before power is considered.
The GT-R asks questions about turbochargers, boost control, the ATTESA system, hydraulics, transfer hardware and HICAS alongside the engine and gearbox. A dashboard without warnings cannot verify those systems under load.
The 350Z asks its own questions about the exact VQ variant, oil history, cooling, clutch or automatic transmission, differential, suspension and wheel or tyre fitment. It is simpler only in comparison with the GT-R’s extra systems, not simple in the abstract.
The R33 has nominal rear seats. The Z is a strict two-seater with a rear hatch and brace. Sit in each and test the actual luggage and access rather than turning seat count into a lifestyle assumption.
What evidence should you demand before buying either Nissan?
For the R33, establish chassis identity, Japanese and UK history, import documents, originality and modification provenance before specialist inspection. For the 350Z, establish exact engine stage, UK or import identity, history, corrosion, repairs and modifications. See both cold and inspect underneath.
The R33 deserves particular fraud resistance because a GT-R identity carries substantial value. Match stamped identity, documents and physical GT-R construction with a recognised specialist. Do not publish full identity numbers while seeking casual opinions online.
Japanese auction sheets and export certificates are evidence only when genuine and connected to the chassis. Translate material properly and retain the original. A neat folder can still contain papers belonging to another car.
For either car, build a chronology from MOT mileages, invoices, ownership, body work and fitted parts. Inspect corrosion, repair seams, underseal, jacking damage, tyres, brakes and alignment. The 350Z buyer’s guide supplies a full viewing structure.
Modified output needs invoices, hardware identification, calibration information and current diagnostic evidence. A rolling-road graph is one test result, not proof that the shell, brakes or drivetrain are healthy.
How should you compare the ownership budget?
Use dated quotes for purchase, insurance, specialist inspection, immediate repairs, scheduled maintenance, tyres, brakes, fluids, corrosion, storage and modification rectification. Add a contingency for every unresolved system. Do not use fuel or road tax as the whole cost comparison.
An R33’s rarer identity and complex systems can make parts and expertise decisive. Confirm who can diagnose it, where parts come from and whether lead times suit the intended use.
A 350Z may offer easier UK sourcing, but consumables and corrosion work still cost real money. The cheapest advert can have the largest deferred maintenance bill.
Insurance should see the exact import status, valuation, security, mileage and every modification before money changes hands. Ask whether agreed value or tracking conditions apply.

Which Nissan suits each use?
The R33 suits a buyer who specifically wants GT-R history and is prepared for specialist import-car stewardship. The 350Z suits a buyer seeking the later two-seat Z layout and naturally aspirated V6. For frequent use, test cabin, luggage, visibility, noise, local support and parts access.
Neither should be chosen from an internet driving myth. Arrange a lawful, insured road test and independent inspection. Track use requires its own preparation, instruction and cover.
If originality matters, define it before shopping. Period modifications, reversible upgrades and converted shells occupy different positions, and the evidence should say which one you are buying.
If the car is a gift subject, ask which exact Nissan matters. A person who owns a 350Z usually does not want the more expensive Skyline substituted as a supposed upgrade.

An earlier 350Z can share the drawing while carrying different output. When the requested statistics must describe an earlier DE or RevUp car, use the custom route rather than silently printing HR figures.
