An R32 GT-R can have thirty-seven years of repairs, imports, parts and claims behind it. I would not start by asking whether the paint shines or whether the engine feels fast. I would start by making the identity and the physical car tell one story.
How do you prove an R32 is a genuine GT-R?
Confirm the complete BNR32 identity from the vehicle and its records, then make the stamped identifiers, registration data, import history and physical specification agree. GT-R badges, wider panels, an RB26 engine or an R32 registration description are supporting clues, not proof by themselves.
R32 names a Skyline generation, not one specification. Nissan sold other R32 variants alongside the GT-R, and decades of parts interchange mean a convincing exterior can sit over a different original identity. The complete code matters.
Compare identifiers in more than one place and investigate any sign of alteration, mismatch or replacement. A legitimate repair or imported-document correction may have an explanation, but the explanation needs records. An identity conflict is not something a general article can settle remotely.
The R32, R33 and R34 comparison separates the three GT-R faces and chassis codes. It helps identify a photograph. It does not replace the documentary and physical checks needed for a particular vehicle.

The power numbers are not a contradiction. The poster converts the familiar Japanese 280 PS rating to 276 bhp because POWER is always bhp in Jonathan’s catalogue. The 280 PS guide explains the unit and period context.
This reference describes a factory example. It does not prove that a car being sold retains its original engine, turbochargers, control system, driveline, suspension or mass.
Which records should you check before viewing an imported R32 GT-R?
Reconcile the UK registration record, chassis identity, import and registration dates, ownership history, invoices, mileage evidence, service work and modification documents. Use the official MOT and recall routes, but recognise that a UK MOT history cannot show the car’s complete life before import.
The current GOV.UK MOT-history service shows recorded tests, mileage entries, pass or fail results and defects for the period it covers. For cars, results generally reach back to 2005 in Great Britain. A car imported later will naturally have a shorter UK trail.
Read the chronology rather than adding up stamps. Mileage entries should move coherently. A gap, cluster of tests, replacement instrument or unit conversion needs an explanation and supporting record. Kilometres and miles should never be merged as if they were the same scale.
Use the current vehicle-recall service and ask a Nissan specialist how recall or campaign information applies to a Japanese-market car. A generic model-year search can be useful, but the individual identity remains decisive.
Invoices should connect dates, mileage, components and the business that did the work. Photographs can support a restoration or repaint, but an image of parts beside the car is not evidence that they were installed or calibrated correctly.
How should you inspect an R32 GT-R body and previous repairs?
Inspect the complete shell above and below, including structural seams, mounting points, floors, sills, arches, suspension areas, jacking points, glass surrounds and water paths. Look for corrosion, distortion, uneven repairs and inconsistent coatings, then use a marque specialist for any doubtful area.
This is not a list of places guaranteed to fail. It is a way to avoid judging an old performance car from its visible upper panels. A clean bumper and polished bonnet say little about seams, underbody repairs or hidden moisture.
View the car dry, clean and in good light. Compare gaps and fasteners from side to side. Look for paint edges, overspray, sealant that changes character, disturbed spot welds and underseal that prevents inspection. None proves poor work alone. Together they tell you where to ask for repair records.
Confirm that doors, bonnet, boot and windows operate consistently. Check every drainage route you can access without dismantling the car and inspect the cabin and luggage areas for moisture evidence. Smell, staining and fresh trim can all prompt a closer look, but they do not diagnose a cause.
A body kit or replaced front panel affects artwork as well as value and condition. Photograph the full front and both corners so the standard drawing can be compared honestly later.
What should you check around the RB26DETT, turbos and cooling system?
Start the engine from cold, verify fluids and warning-light behaviour, inspect for leaks and disturbed wiring, listen through warm-up, and review compression, leak-down or specialist diagnostic evidence where appropriate. Make the turbo, fuel, cooling and control hardware agree with the claimed tune.
A cold start is useful because pre-warming can hide behaviour you wanted to observe. Arrange it with the seller rather than touching an unfamiliar car without permission. Record the initial dashboard lamp sequence, idle, smoke, noises and fluid condition for a specialist to interpret.
Map every non-standard component. Turbochargers, intake, exhaust, injectors, pumps, intercooler, boost control, engine management and cooling changes work as a system. A large headline power claim without a calibration record, supporting fuel system or measured result is a question, not a specification.

Cooling evidence includes radiator, hoses, caps, fans, thermostat work, coolant history and signs of previous overheating. Do not infer internal condition from a newly fitted visible part. A specialist inspection can add pressure tests and measurements suited to the car.
How should you check the R32 GT-R transmission and ATTESA driveline?
Confirm that the five-speed manual, clutch, differentials, shafts, hubs and ATTESA E-TS system are present in the claimed form. Check fluids and invoices, inspect for leaks or damage, and use a controlled road test and suitable diagnostics with an R32 specialist.
Nissan’s factory description establishes electronically controlled torque-split four-wheel drive. It does not say that every warning lamp, sensor, pump, controller or mechanical component remains healthy decades later.
Ask how the clutch, gearbox and differentials were matched to any engine changes. A stronger clutch may alter pedal behaviour without proving the gearbox was rebuilt. A transmission invoice should name parts, date and mileage rather than relying on a seller’s shorthand.
Tyre rolling circumference matters across a four-wheel-drive system. Record all four sizes, brands, models, wear levels and pressures. A matching label does not guarantee matching effective diameter when wear or incorrect sizing separates the axles.
On the road, observe engagement, shift quality, noises, vibration and warning behaviour without performing launches or unsafe tests. An ordinary legal drive can reveal enough to justify further workshop checks.
What should you inspect in the brakes, tyres, steering and suspension?
Check fitted parts, condition, age, leaks, play, corrosion, alignment evidence and side-to-side consistency. Compare the actual wheel and tyre package with the suspension and brake hardware, then budget from measured condition rather than assuming upgrades are improvements.
Nissan records multi-link suspension and ventilated discs front and rear on its heritage example. Used cars may carry later dampers, springs, arms, bushes, brakes and wheels. Name what is fitted before deciding whether it is standard, compatible or valuable.
Read tyre date codes, sizes and wear across the tread. Uneven wear can have several causes, including pressure, alignment, damaged parts or driving use, so it should lead to measurement rather than a single diagnosis.
Brake inspection should include discs, pads, hoses, pipes, calipers, fluid history and pedal behaviour. A large caliper behind an aftermarket wheel does not establish the complete specification or condition.
Ask for geometry records where suspension height or arms changed. Inspect clearance through steering lock and suspension movement. A parked stance photograph cannot prove the car remains free of contact under load.
How should you assess a modified R32 GT-R?
Create a versioned build sheet covering engine, fuel, cooling, management, exhaust, clutch, gearbox, differentials, suspension, brakes, wheels, body and wiring. Match every major claim to parts, installation, calibration, maintenance and insurance evidence.
Modified is not one condition. A reversible wheel change and a rebuilt engine with different turbochargers carry completely different evidence needs. Divide the car into systems so a polished parts list cannot hide a gap.
Ask what the car was built to do and whether its current setup matches that use. Track, drag, road and show priorities can lead to different cooling, geometry, noise and maintenance choices. This is not a ranking. It tells you which records and inspection skills the car requires.

Use a legal, insured drive that includes cold start, low-speed controls, ordinary acceleration, steady speed, braking and manoeuvring. Record observations, then price unresolved work with an R32 specialist. The decision should include condition, provenance, modification quality and realistic maintenance capacity.
Do not use a road test to reproduce magazine performance figures. Public roads, an unfamiliar imported car and unknown tyres are not a test facility. You need consistent controls, temperatures, warning behaviour and ordinary mechanical response.

Those figures are not a measurement of a modified customer car. If the vehicle has a different engine tune or mass, do not mix its strongest claimed power with the factory poster’s weight and acceleration.
The artwork was reviewed after repaint-specific bumper and mirror details were corrected. Choose the standard builder when the front matches. Use the custom route when visible bodywork makes it a different picture.
