One car can have three different 0 to 60 times

I used to think a sprint time was the easy line in a specification block. Then I found two finished GT86 posters saying 5.9 seconds, a number that did not fit the car. The correction was not a hunt for a nicer number. It meant working out which question each source had measured.

Why do 0 to 60 times differ for the same car?

Zero to 60 times differ when the speed target, timing procedure, car specification or conditions differ. A bare time is not enough. It needs a source and the exact version it describes.

The first check is embarrassingly simple: does the source say 60 mph, 62 mph or 100 km/h? European manufacturer material often uses 0 to 100 km/h, which is approximately 0 to 62 mph. Changing the label to 0 to 60 does not turn it into a new measurement.

The same caution applies when reading a buyer’s guide. The GT86 guide explains the corrected poster time without presenting one number as a result for every gearbox and market.

What do the target and test method change?

The target decides where the clock stops, and the method decides where it starts and how the run is recorded. Results are directly comparable only when those definitions match.

SAE International revised its vehicle acceleration measurement practice in 2025. Its stated purpose is to make launch and passing measurements repeatable and to standardise time zero. The existence of that practice is a useful warning in itself: time zero and procedure have to be defined before two numbers can be treated as the same measurement.

Can the car and conditions change the result?

Yes. Transmission, tyres, vehicle load, launch procedure, surface and conditions can all belong to the result. If those details change, the measured time may change even when the badge on the boot does not.

That does not make one source dishonest. It means the number has a boundary. A manufacturer specification, an instrumented magazine test and an owner’s GPS run answer related questions, but they are not interchangeable records.

Which acceleration figure belongs on a car poster?

The poster should carry the checked figure for the exact drawn version. It should not use the quickest number found online or average several results that measured different cars.

I keep the model year, engine, transmission context and source together while checking a specification block. If a number falls outside every credible range, I stop. The GT86 now prints 7.6 seconds because the old 5.9-second master was wrong, and that decision is written beside the figure so it cannot drift back later.

The same rule sits behind the poster specification check. Once a car is approved, the builder shows the complete poster with the signed figures, paint and registration together.

What are the sources and limits of this guide?

SAE J1491 supports the need for a repeatable acceleration procedure and a defined time zero. Manufacturer technical material shows why speed target and vehicle configuration must remain attached to a published result.

The current reference is SAE J1491, revised in May 2025. Toyota’s 2017 GT86 technical material is an example of a maker labelling the target as 0 to 62 mph and separating vehicle configurations. Neither source turns a road test or an owner run into a model-wide fact.

Questions people actually ask

Why do 0 to 60 times vary for the same car?
The published runs may use different test procedures, transmissions, tyres, loads, launch methods or conditions. Some quoted figures also finish at 62 mph rather than 60 mph, so the source and label matter as much as the number.
Is 0 to 62 mph the same as 0 to 60 mph?
No. Sixty-two miles per hour is approximately 100 kilometres per hour, so a 0 to 62 test has a higher finishing speed. The difference may be small, but the two labels should not be swapped.
Should I trust the manufacturer or a road test?
Trust each for what it actually records. A manufacturer figure describes its stated vehicle and procedure, while an instrumented road test describes the tested car and method. Compare them only after checking those labels.
