In short
- On a current GB plate, the two middle numbers identify the first-registration period.
- A prefix plate uses its first letter for age, while a suffix plate uses its final letter.
- The registration period is not proof of the manufacture date, and a transferred plate may not show the car's original age identifier.
The quickest answer depends on recognising the plate format. Enter the registration below to identify the age marker, then use the vehicle record when the plate is dateless, transferred or otherwise unable to establish the car’s date.
How old is the car from its registration?
Enter the complete registration and read the issue period returned by the decoder. That period tells you when the identifier was issued. It does not guarantee when the vehicle was built, and a private transfer can replace the original visible age marker.
How do current-format plate ages work?
Read the two numbers in the middle. March to August uses the last two digits of the year. September to February uses that number plus 50. A 26 plate covers March to August 2026, while a 76 plate covers September 2026 to February 2027.
| Identifier | Issue period |
|---|---|
| 25 | March to August 2025 |
| 75 | September 2025 to February 2026 |
| 26 | March to August 2026 |
| 76 | September 2026 to February 2027 |
The current format began on 1 September 2001. Use the complete number plate year chart when you need a different identifier rather than extrapolating from memory.
Where is the age letter on an older UK plate?
A prefix registration puts the age letter first, as in A123 BCD. A suffix registration puts it last, as in ABC 123A. The letter must be read against the correct scheme because the change dates and positions are different.
| Format | Example | Age marker |
|---|---|---|
| Current | AB12 CDE | The two middle numbers |
| Prefix | A123 BCD | The first letter |
| Suffix | ABC 123A | The final letter |
| Dateless | ABC 123 | No age marker |
The UK registration format guide helps separate those patterns before a year table is used.
Which number plates do not show a car age?
Dateless registrations do not carry an age identifier. Northern Irish registrations use another system, and a transferred private registration can replace the original age-marked plate. Do not force any of them into the nearest GB format.
A Q registration also needs the vehicle record. It is used when age or identity cannot be established in the ordinary way, so the letter is not a model-year code. For a live check, use the official GOV.UK MOT history service.
What does a number plate date actually prove?
It tells you the issue period represented by that registration. It does not by itself prove the build date, model year or original registration of a vehicle wearing a transferred plate. Use the V5C and official vehicle history when those distinctions matter.
DVLA’s INF104 registration leaflet is the source for the formats and age identifiers. Its personalised-registration guidance states that a registration cannot make a vehicle look newer than it is. The private-plate guide explains that boundary in detail.
Questions people actually ask
- How can I tell how old my car is from the number plate?
- Identify the registration format first. A current GB plate uses its two middle numbers, a prefix plate uses its first letter, and a suffix plate uses its final letter. The result is an issue period, not necessarily the vehicle's exact manufacture date.
- What do the two numbers on a current UK plate mean?
- They identify one six-month registration period. March to August uses the year number, so 26 means March to August 2026. September to February adds 50, so 76 means September 2026 to February 2027.
- Can a private number plate make a car look newer?
- No. DVLA rules do not allow a registration to make a vehicle appear newer than it is. A personalised or dateless registration can hide the original age marker, so use the vehicle record when you need its actual first-registration date.
- Can every UK number plate tell you the age of a car?
- No. Dateless registrations do not contain an age identifier, and Northern Irish registrations use a different format. A transferred private plate may also hide the original age marker. Check the vehicle record instead of forcing those plates through an age table.
