I offer two engine buttons on the NB builder because Jonathan has two complete checked 1.8 specification blocks. That is not permission to turn every NB into one of them. The 1.6 existed, and a swapped or imported car can break a tidy year rule. Evidence chooses the figures.

The labels describe different engine specifications within the NB generation. The later 1.8 added variable valve timing and carries different power, torque and weight figures from the early 1.8. The 1.6 is another factory engine and needs its own verified block rather than borrowed 1.8 numbers.

Mazda's official MX-5 chronology records the second generation in 1998 and a July 2000 facelift with a more powerful 1.8-litre engine. The chronology establishes the change, while the exact UK bhp and torque figures in this shop come from Jonathan's checked poster records.

The broad factory sequence is useful: early NB, then facelift with the later 1.8. It is not a complete identity test. A UK registration date can lag production, an import can carry another market specification, and a replacement engine can sever the original relationship entirely.

How do you identify which engine an MX-5 NB has?

Use the VIN and vehicle documents, inspect engine markings, read service and replacement invoices, and compare the evidence with the exact market and build date. A badge, bumper or seller's typed capacity is supporting evidence, not proof.

Start with the V5C and VIN, then ask whether the engine is original. Check that identifiers agree with one another and with invoices. If the engine number or capacity has changed, make sure the record and insurance position have been handled correctly through the appropriate official routes.

Photograph markings without cleaning, scraping or reaching near hot or moving parts. A specialist can locate and interpret them safely. Online decoder results should be checked against primary documentation because model-year and market conventions can differ.

A seller may honestly call a car "1.8" without knowing whether the later engine is fitted. Ask for a photograph of the engine bay, VIN, build label and history before travelling. The answer can affect valuation, parts, insurance and the poster block.

Do not infer engine from a facelift bumper alone. Mazda linked the facelift with a more powerful 1.8 in its chronology, but bumpers can be replaced and 1.6 cars existed within the broader generation. Appearance narrows the search and documents finish it.

What should you know about the MX-5 NB 1.6?

The 1.6 is a real NB factory engine choice and should remain labelled as such. This shop does not publish a 1.6 stats block because Jonathan's finished NB commissions do not provide a complete approved one. Use a custom request with verified evidence instead of selecting a 1.8.

Not offering a button is an accuracy boundary, not a claim that the engine did not exist. A live variant must change every printed figure that belongs to the engine and keep its own human verification date. A guessed block would look finished while describing another car.

The 1.6 can share the broad NB body, so a front portrait may be visually suitable while its stats are not. This is exactly why artwork identity and specification identity are separate checks. One drawing can serve several mechanical versions only when the numbers change correctly.

If the recipient's 1.6 is visually standard, send the VIN-derived identity and reliable source records through the custom request. Do not copy a 1.6 number set from a different market or gearbox simply to fill six rows.

A print without a stats block would be more honest than a wrong one, but the current product design uses the block. The correct route is therefore verification before sale rather than silently deleting the inconvenient distinction.

What is the checked early MX-5 NB 1.8 specification?

Jonathan's checked early European 1.8 block covers the 1998 to 2000 choice and uses a BP-4W 1.8-litre inline four, 138 bhp, 162 Nm, 1,000 kg, 7.7 seconds to 60 mph and 127 mph.

The power line demonstrates a frequent unit trap. The engine's 103 kW rating corresponds to about 140 PS but 138 bhp. Jonathan's older poster printed 140 under a BHP heading. The catalogue follows the house rule and prints the converted 138 bhp.

The 1,000 kg figure is Jonathan's approved poster value. Published kerb weights vary by market and equipment, so another source can show a heavier car without proving this one wrong. The kerb-weight guide explains that boundary.

The default builder choice is the early 1.8 because four of Jonathan's five finished NB commissions use it. Default means the most evidenced shop starting point, not the engine most NB cars necessarily carry.

What is the checked later MX-5 NB 1.8 VVT specification?

Jonathan's checked later 1.8 VVT block covers the 2001 to 2005 builder choice and uses his BP6D wording, 146 bhp, 168 Nm, 1,025 kg, 7.2 seconds to 60 mph and 127 mph.

VVT means variable valve timing. It changes valve-event timing according to operating conditions rather than fixing one timing relationship for the complete speed range. It does not mean the engine has a different cylinder layout or that every part changed.

The source poster printed 150 bhp, 162 Nm and 900 kg. Those three values did not survive verification. The power had no coherent UK or European source, the torque repeated the early engine, and the weight sat outside the published NB2 range.

The corrected 109 kW rating converts to about 146 bhp. The checked torque is 168 Nm, paired with 124 lb-ft, and the weight is 1,025 kg. The decision is recorded in the car file so a later editor does not "restore" the poster's neat but incompatible numbers.

BP6D is preserved because it is Jonathan's wording and a designation used on the engine and by parts suppliers. BP-Z3 is another common name around the later VVT unit. A different code in an advert should prompt identification, not an automatic accusation of error.

Why do MX-5 NB power and weight figures disagree online?

Sources can use PS, bhp or kW, quote different markets, gearboxes and equipment, or apply different kerb-weight conventions. Compare labels, market and derivative before comparing digits. A number outside every plausible range deserves investigation; an ordinary spread does not.

Convert units only once. The later 146 figure is already bhp. Converting it as though it were PS would make the engine too weak, just as printing the early 140 PS as 140 bhp makes that engine too strong.

Keep the numbers as a set. Pairing later power with early torque or an exceptionally light weight creates a car no source describes. A specification block is not a menu of favourable figures.

Is the MX-5 NB VVT choice the same as the facelift choice?

The later 1.8 VVT is associated with the facelift period, but engine and visible front remain separate evidence questions. Jonathan deliberately uses one approved front drawing across 1998 to 2005 while the builder changes the stats block.

Mazda records the facelift and more powerful 1.8 together. Jonathan's commission archive includes the same base drawing used for early and later owners, with one later customer car carrying its own banner, mesh fog lamp, tow hook and square plate.

He reviewed the visible difference and explicitly approved this one drawing for the whole NB run. That is a product decision based on cars already sold, not a general rule that every facelift can share art.

How should an engine swap or modified NB be handled?

Record the engine actually installed, its provenance, mapping and supporting work. Keep measured power separate from factory crankshaft figures, and disclose the change to the insurer and official record where required. Do not select a factory poster block because it is numerically close.

An engine bay photograph may show an intake or cam cover without proving internal specification. Ask for purchase invoices, engine number, installation work, ECU calibration, fuel requirement and a complete rolling-road graph if an output is claimed.

Wheel power and manufacturer crankshaft power use different measurement points. Adding a generic drivetrain-loss percentage does not turn one into the other with certainty. Label the test exactly or keep factory figures off the modified print.

A swap can also change cooling, clutch, gearbox, differential and brake requirements. A buyer needs a qualified inspection. An artwork customer needs a coherent source block. Neither can be settled from the exterior badge.

Which engine should an MX-5 NB poster use?

Select early 1.8 only for a confirmed BP-4W-period car and 1.8 VVT only for the confirmed later engine. For a 1.6, swap or uncertain car, use a custom request and provide evidence. Never choose by the larger power number.
