Reusing art can be either careful engineering or an accuracy shortcut. The difference is whether the picture remains true and whether everything that is not shared stays explicit. This case is useful because the two products share a 184 kB geometry file while keeping separate identities all the way to the print file.
When can two different cars share one illustration?
They can share an illustration when the exact sold view contains no material body difference that would make either car wrong. Different titles, badges and specifications must stay outside the shared geometry and be supplied by each model separately.
The test is deliberately visual. Two versions with the same badge can need separate drawings when a facelift changes the nose. Two different models can share one when the approved front view has already worked for both. Names and platform codes are useful evidence, but they do not overrule the picture.
How do the M2 F87 and 2 Series Coupe share one drawing?
Both catalogue records import the M2's single artwork file. The renderer then combines that geometry with the selected model's title, specification, layer rules and customer configuration. No second copy of the car shapes exists.
I originally drew the F87 M2 and later reused that front for a 2 Series Coupe M Sport commission because the coupe looked the same from the front at poster scale. Customers accepted the result. That completed work is stronger evidence than a theoretical rule written afterwards, so the new catalogue keeps the shared source.
This is not the same as renaming an M2. The F22 2 Series record is its own product with its own year range, title, figures and review date. It merely points to the same linework and paint shapes. The M2 and 2 Series identity comparison explains what a buyer should check on the car itself.

Which facts must remain separate when artwork is shared?
The title, model range, specification, badges, layout adjustments and approval belong to each car. Only the geometry that is genuinely common should be shared. A common file must never become a shortcut to common facts.

The table is produced from the live car files. That matters because both BMW records contain decisions that could be lost in copied prose. Their weights use the same DIN convention, which excludes the 75 kg driver included by the heavier EU kerb figure. Their engine wording stays as I set it for each finished poster.
The 2 Series title needs two lines and therefore sits at a slightly different vertical position from the M2 title. Even layout can be model-specific while the car shape beneath it is shared. The finished composition, rather than an isolated SVG path, is the thing being sold.
How is the M2 badge removed from the 2 Series drawing?
The grille script is a named artwork layer. The 2 Series model lists that layer in its hidden set, so the shared renderer omits it only for that product. The BMW roundel remains because it belongs on both cars.
This is a precise exception, not a paint-over. The badge layer is 79 by 17 pixels and is kept as a small raster detail. The shared artwork still contains it once. The M2 asks for all layers, while the 2 Series asks for the same art minus that one layer.
A whole-layer rule is safe only after the layer has been inspected. Photoshop names are not guarantees. One layer can contain two unrelated objects, so hiding it without drawing it alone could remove a lamp, reflection or second badge. Here the roundel and M2 script are separate, which makes the exclusion honest.
The same principle appears in the headlight-shape article. A reusable visual system works only when fixed details, paint and conditional pieces remain explicit instead of becoming one flattened picture.
How are two products reviewed when they share a revision?
Each model records approval against the same artwork revision. If the shared file changes, both records stop matching and both need checking. Their approvals are separate because their final compositions are not identical.
This catches a subtle failure. Looking at the corrected M2 proves the M2. It does not prove that the 2 Series still hides the badge, uses the right title, fits its two-line layout and prints the correct statistics. Both must be rendered as products after a geometry change.
The advantage is still substantial. If a bonnet crease or mirror shape is corrected, there is one place to fix it. A copied 184 kB file that differs only by a badge would eventually drift. One might receive the correction while the other remains live and wrong.
The specification-checking article covers the other half. Geometry approval does not validate a torque conversion or model year, so artwork and figures retain separate evidence even when they meet in one output.
When must two cars have separate drawings instead?
Separate them when the sold view contains a meaningful change to the body, lamps, grille, bumper or proportions. A model option can swap words and figures, but it cannot move a drawn line or make an absent roof appear.
The two Fiesta ST Mk8 faces are the clear opposite case. Their facelift changes the lamps, grille and bumper together, so the nose reads as another car. The facelift comparison uses separate artwork for that reason.
A small lamp signature can be visible without invalidating the whole front. I chose the full 2014 to 2021 range for the F22 and full 2016 to 2021 range for the F87 because I had already sold the image successfully across those years. That is a recorded shop decision, not a universal rule for BMW facelifts.
Viewpoint sets another boundary. Two cars may share a front drawing and require different side drawings. The MX-5 ND soft top and RF demonstrate it neatly: their front artwork contains no roof, while a side view would have to show the fastback buttresses or fabric top.
What does a customer see when the artwork is shared?
The customer sees two catalogue entries with their own car names and figures. Opening either builder loads the same checked front geometry, then applies that model's badge rule, title, paint, mirror choice, background and registration.
Open the BMW M2 builder and open the 2 Series Coupe builder. The shared face is visible, but the product identity is never left for the customer to infer from one generic option.
Separate URLs also protect search intent and saved orders. A shared link states which BMW was chosen. The order retains that slug with its configuration, so rerendering later does not ask somebody to remember whether the same-looking preview belonged to the M2 or 2 Series.
This is why the implementation is two models reading one drawing rather than one product with a vague BMW switch. The underlying file is a production detail. The customer-facing choice remains the car they own.
What first-hand evidence supports this case study?
The evidence is my own production record: I reused the M2 front for a completed 2 Series commission, customers accepted that view, and both current catalogue models were separately reviewed against the same revision on 4 August 2026.
The source is recorded beside each car in src/data/cars/bmw-m2-f87.ts and src/data/cars/bmw-2-series-coupe.ts. The shared artwork import, hidden badge layer, separate titles, checked statistics and review revisions are executable records rather than a retrospective marketing claim.
That evidence supports this exact pair and this exact front view. It does not support reusing any BMW drawing for any related model. Each new case has to pass the picture test on its own.
