That is the complete date answer. A car first registered on 1 March and one first registered at the end of August can both carry 26. The plate narrows the period to six months; it does not encode the month or day inside it.
Where does the age identifier appear?
It is the middle pair of characters in a current-format Great Britain registration. In AB26 CDE, the letters AB are the memory tag, 26 is the age identifier and CDE is the random element.

The first two letters are not another date. DVLA calls them the memory tag, and they relate to the registration series. The final three letters are the random element. Reading 26 or 76 from anywhere except the middle pair risks finding a number that was never intended as an age code.
Why does September use 76 instead of 26?
The March code uses the final two digits of the year, while the September code adds 50. For 2026, that gives 26 in March and 76 in September.
The age identifier changes every six months. This same rule gives 25 and 75 for 2025, then 27 and 77 for 2027.
The September addition is always 50 within the current system. It is not the car’s age and it is not a countdown. The pattern is simply what lets two new registration series exist in one calendar year without reusing the same middle pair.
Does a 26 or 76 plate prove when the car was built?
No. It identifies a first-registration period. A car may have been manufactured earlier, and an imported or re-registered vehicle can need more evidence than its displayed plate supplies.
Use the registration record, VIN and manufacturer information when the build date or exact model year matters. Model year and registration year are different labels.
This distinction matters around a facelift. A vehicle can be registered after a revised version reaches dealers while still being the earlier shape, or it can be built in one year and first registered in the next. The face, VIN and model information decide which drawing is right. The age code only gives the registration window.
Can a private plate make an older car look like a 2026 car?
No. DVLA rules do not allow a registration that makes a vehicle appear newer than it is. A dateless registration avoids an age code, but it does not change the vehicle record.
